NC Gov. Josh Stein's Closet

Maybe North Carolina is going off the deep end because that's exactly what people voted for. Or did they?

On July 17, 2024, Josh Stein’s parents each wired $125,000 to the North Carolina Democratic Leadership Committee, or NCDLC. Six days later, NCDLC sent $7.5 million to their son’s campaign for governor. On September 11, Jane Stein gave NCDLC another $300,000. Fifteen days later, it sent Josh $5.25 million. Then came the tidy little bookend: the Democratic Governors Association sent NCDLC $2 million on October 21; NCDLC sent Stein $3.94 million the next day.[1][2]

Political committees pool money, and the filings do not put ankle monitors on individual dollars. It is, however, a very good reason to ask who arranged the timing, when the outgoing transfers were authorized, and why the public is expected to treat those questions as impolite.

Raleigh legalized the side door

Twenty days before the matching family wires, North Carolina lawmakers overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto and rewrote campaign-finance law. The new statute excluded FEC committees and IRS-reporting 527 organizations from the state definition of “political committee.” It also allowed one of those federal organizations to transfer unlimited money to a state party or affiliated-party committee from a segregated account containing sources permissible under North Carolina law.[3]

The statute does not authorize corporate, union, foreign, or otherwise prohibited money to enter that account. Nor do the reviewed filings prove that it did. What the law created was a lawful federal-to-state channel whose internal segregation cannot be reconstructed from the ordinary North Carolina ledger.

That is not my colorful description. In 2020, when DGA lawyers asked about a closely related federal-Super-PAC route, the State Board of Elections warned that it would create a “significant loophole” capable of making state restrictions “irrelevant.” DGA’s own request explained that FEC reports would show the committee transfer, not the original donors behind it. The 2024 statute superseded that opinion.[4]

North Carolina still requires certain federal and 527 reports to be cross-filed, but the State Board says those reports are not posted on its website. Citizens get to assemble the puzzle from separate federal, IRS, and state shelves.[5]

Very transparent, provided you already know where everything is hidden.

The family cup and the national fire hose

Adam and Jane Stein put $570,000.01 into NCDLC during 2024 and each gave Josh the lawful $6,400 direct maximum.[6] NCDLC transferred $33.53 million to Stein before Election Day and another $1.05 million afterward. The parents’ money therefore equaled about 1.65 percent of the full $34.58 million. Saying their gifts magically “became” the whole amount would be nonsense. Saying their money entered the same pooled vehicle that delivered it — sometimes days before enormous transfers — is simply what the reports show.

DGA is identified as providing NCDLC $7 million.[7] It later said it invested more than $15 million in North Carolina, while its separately organized ally America Works USA spent another $15 million promoting Stein; those descriptions may overlap and should not be blindly added together.[8] The public record does not establish that every NCDLC dollar came through the new federal route. It establishes that the route existed, DGA money entered NCDLC, and NCDLC became Stein’s $34.58 million delivery vehicle.

The machine has software, lawyers, and a field department

North Carolina Democratic Party materials say NGP VAN receives the state voter file, standardizes it, and loads it into VoteBuilder. Catalist says its national file combines election-official records, commercial information, and partner feedback, and integrates with NGP VAN.[9][10]

The missing middle is America Votes. It calls itself the progressive movement’s “coordination hub” and said its 2024 work contributed to North Carolina’s gubernatorial result.[11] Its return for July 2023 through June 2024 reported $1,057,232 to NGP VAN, $506,226 to Catalist, and $401,281 to Elias Law Group, alongside grants to DGA and America Works USA.[12] The filing does not earmark those grants for Stein. It does place the data vendor, campaign software, election lawyers, and governors’ organizations in one coordinating nonprofit’s financial orbit.

State Voices identifies Blueprint NC as its North Carolina table and advertises Catalist voter files plus VAN access to nonprofits; its 2024 return paid Catalist $884,720 and granted Blueprint $318,823.[13]

Better still, a September 2024 NCDLC fundraiser featuring Stein registered supporters through NGP VAN and listed `cate@joshstein.org` as the organizer contact.[14] NGP VAN later said its technology helped “elect Governor Josh Stein.”[15] At that point, calling the data layer unrelated to the money operation requires more imagination than connecting it.

The socialist influence is real

Chestnut Fund—whose trustees include Jane Stein, Adam Stein, Gerda Stein, and Alan Rottenberg—transferred $9,105,000 into the “Lupine Fund c/o Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund” between 2021 and 2024: $1.625 million in 2021, $2.2 million in 2022, $2.815 million in 2023, and $2.465 million in 2024.[21][38]

Between fiscal years 2017 and 2025, Fidelity Charitable reported aggregate grants of $183,442 to CODEPINK Women for Peace, $642,550 to the Committee of 100, $1,227,832 to the Jewish Funders Network, $146,675,952 to the Jewish Communal Fund, and $114,113,593 to the Bank of America Charitable Gift Fund.[39]

Jewish Communal Fund, a donor-advised-fund sponsor, reported four grants totaling $149,429 to the DSA Fund from FY2017 through FY2021.[16][17][18][19] DSA describes that fund as its related 501(c)(3) educational affiliate, legally distinct from the national 501(c)(4).[20]

JCF appears publicly as the legal grantor, while the recommending donor-advised account generally remains unidentified.[22] Somebody used that charitable vehicle to direct money to DSA’s nonprofit arm.

Individual donations and membership dues are not ordinarily publicly disclosed.[23]

JCF’s own public reports total $13.31 million from JCF to Jewish Funders Network across FY2015-FY2025.[24] Zoya Raynes served as JCF president from 2017 to 2021 and now chairs JFN’s board, as well as her full-time employment as an executive at Bank of America; JCF chief executive Rachel Schnoll also sits on JFN's board and is CEO of the Jewish Communal Fund.[25][26] The DSA-grant series overlaps Raynes’s tenure.

The operational overlap is documented too, but is constrained. DSA’s International Committee says it “teamed up” with CODEPINK and local DSA chapters for a 2022 Venezuelan feminist tour that included Durham; its own pages also record joint programming with CODEPINK and People’s Forum.[27] That proves common programming, including in North Carolina.

CBS reported in July 2026 that Neville Roy Singham — Jodie Evans’ husband and a major People’s Forum backer — was under a federal foreign-agent and tax investigation concerning whether money was unlawfully routed through nonprofits he controlled. He had not been charged.[28]

There is nevertheless a documented personnel bridge: JCF granted money to Agrarian Trust and Rainforest Action Network, where CODEPINK cofounder Evans held leadership roles.[29][30][31]

A 2010 Center for Constitutional Rights donor report lists Jewish Communal Fund, “Adam and Jane Stein,” and CODEPINK cofounder Medea Benjamin on the same donor roll, in different giving bands.[32]

A 2016 report lists “Adam and Jane Stein” and Neville Roy Singham in the same $2,500-$4,999 band.[33]

Why the vehicles matter

JCF gave Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ) $19,300 in general support in FY2020-FY2021. AFGJ acknowledged serving as fiscal sponsor for Samidoun; Treasury later designated Samidoun a sham charity and international fundraiser for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a Marxist-Leninist liberation organization.[34][35]

It shows why the wrappers matter. Donor-advised funds, affiliated 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, fiscal sponsors, federal committees, 527s, pooled party accounts, shared accountants, shared lawyers, and shared data platforms can all be legal. They can also by the same token be co-opted and leveraged for other anti-American and anti-Constitutionalist agendas.

A prejudicial verdict:

Stein is no novice: state senator, attorney general, and former consumer-protection official, then a federal-court plaintiff when a criminal statute was applied to his own 2020 campaign ad.[36][37] He has lived inside the difference between aggressive politics, disclosure rules, and chargeable intent.

His campaign benefited from a $34.58 million affiliated-party vehicle, a newly expanded federal-to-state channel, and national money-and-data infrastructure, while his family’s older philanthropic record intersects with documented socialist and Singham-era networks — and the public books remain too fragmented to tell us who ultimately supplied, restricted, authorized, or benefited from every dollar.

Governor Stein, all I wanted was the hold taken off of my DMV record so I can drive again. You may want to fix the "gremlins" in your databases. "Joshua L. Steiner" almost got ya tripped up.
